Study review: pine nut products to improve memory

Pine nut products have proven effectiveness in preventing many diseases and health problems: from high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases to allergies and gastrointestinal diseases. One of the areas of application of pine nut products is improving memory: they are equally useful for both children and adults, improving their academic performance and work performance, and as a means of preventing age-related memory impairment (dementia and its particular manifestations, such as Alzheimer’s disease) . In 2021, a study was published that showed the positive effects of pine nut components on memory. The effect occurs at the cellular level, as pine nut peptides increase synaptic plasticity. [1]

The experiment was carried out on mice in which amnesia had previously been induced using scopolamine. The mice then received peptides extracted from pine nuts. It was found that under the influence of these peptides, amnesia receded, and memory function and learning ability significantly improved.

Scientists have found that this effect is due to several positive effects of pine nut peptides. First, they reduced scopolamine-induced damage to hippocampal neurons. It is these neurons that perform the function of memory of places and space, and they also play an important role in processing and transmitting information further throughout the nervous system and various areas of the brain.

Another positive effect of pine nut products on memory is associated with increased synaptic plasticity. A synapse is the point of contact between two neurons or between a neuron and a cell receiving a signal. If the synapses are strong and flexible, then the memory works normally and retains information for a long time. When synapses weaken, the neural circuit is broken and information is erased. To assess the state of synapses, the study authors used modern high-precision methods, such as Golgi staining and transmission electron microscopy. They showed that “enhanced synaptic plasticity was associated with increased dendritic spine abundance and synaptic density.” This effect was caused by activation of mitochondrial sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) under the influence of peptides. The study also found that pine nut components increased the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that stimulates and supports neuronal development.

Thus, regular intake of pine nut products is an effective prevention of memory impairment. Pine nut oil and other products are useful even if there are no prerequisites for memory impairment: by strengthening neurons and increasing the plasticity of synapses, they improve results in school, work, and everyday life.
