Study review: what scientists know about the pharmacological properties of sea buckthorn

Pine nut oil enriched with sea buckthorn is produced by diffusion method, as a result of which pine nut oil receives all the healing properties of sea buckthorn. The list of these properties is extensive: in August 2022, a large-scale review of the scientific literature for 2010-2021 was published. It considers all the pharmacological properties of sea buckthorn known to scientists at the moment.[1] ā€œSea buckthorn is a medicinal plant, used in traditional and conventional medicine, and cultivated for its fruit, rich in health-promoting compounds.ā€, notes the author of the review. As a result of the analysis, he found that over the past decade, the following properties of sea buckthorn have been most often investigated and proven: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antimicrobial. Scientists have also proven the antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective activities of the plant.

The amount of scientific literature on the antioxidant properties of sea buckthorn is enormous. With the help of various research methods, the activity of sea buckthorn in removing free radicals DPPHĀ· and ABTSĀ· has been proven in recent years. In addition, this product has a regenerative ability (reducing and repairing the damage caused by radicals to the cells of the human body).

The anti-inflammatory properties of sea buckthorn are associated with the content of flavonoids and flavonols. It was found that the extract from sea buckthorn berries affects the activity of anti-inflammatory cytokines and signaling pathways, and also significantly reduces edema in acute inflammation.

At least 5 studies over the past decade have confirmed the anti-thrombotic effect of sea buckthorn. The potential of sea buckthorn as a cancer prevention agent, according to the data collected by the reviewer, is due to its antiproliferative and cytotoxic activity. Experiments conducted on the HepG2 human liver cancer cell line showed that the components of sea buckthorn berries prevent the growth of tumors. Also, a number of in vitro and in vivo studies have led scientists to conclude that sea buckthorn can be used in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Thus, sea buckthorn is a product that complements and enhances the beneficial properties of pine nut oil. Pine nut oil enriched with sea buckthorn can be used for the prevention of:

  • various diseases of inflammatory etiology
  • diseases associated with oxidative stress
  • blood clots
  • metabolic disorders
  • oncological diseases.
