Study review: sea buckthorn for the weight control

Pine nut oil enriched with sea buckthorn has a huge number of beneficial properties, many of which are associated with the unique composition of sea buckthorn. New research on the health benefits of sea buckthorn appears regularly. Thus, in May 2023, a study by a group of Chinese scientists was published on the ability of sea buckthorn to influence a person’s weight, preventing the development of metabolic syndrome and obesity. [1] The authors of the work concluded that sea buckthorn, when consumed regularly, reduces blood lipid levels, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels, and also regulates key metabolites, thereby preventing metabolic disorders.

The study specifically highlighted some of the components of sea buckthorn that are associated with its effects on metabolism. These are polyphenols, including a rich composition of phenolic acids, fatty acids, vitamins (in particular, a large range of tocopherols and tocotrienols), and phytosterols.

These and other components provide a positive effect on metabolism at several levels and sublevels:

  • Regulate glucose levels by influencing receptors in the liver, glucose transport proteins, and other specific enzymes in the blood plasma, adipose tissue and even in muscles.
  • Regulate lipid levels by influencing various stages of lipid metabolism in the kidneys, liver, intestines, adipose tissue, and blood plasma.
  • Provide additional protection to the cardiovascular system that suffers most from lipid metabolism disorders and metabolic syndrome.

The authors of the study cite more than 10 experiments that confirmed the positive effect of sea buckthorn and its products on metabolism. These include studies in children, adolescents, and adults, as well as studies in people with specific medical conditions, such as hypercholesterolemia or hypertension. All of them showed impressive results. For example, “In a randomized, controlled, single-blind, three-way crossover study, sea buckthorn treatment was shown to improve blood glucose levels by 44.7% compared to a control group (p < 0.01), and to decrease the plasma insulin concentration at 30 and 45 min post-treatment by 39.6% (p < 0.01) and 16.5% (p < 0.05), respectively.”[2]

So, regular intake of pine nut oil enriched with sea buckthorn can be recommended both for the prevention of obesity and metabolic syndrome, and for those people who already have problems with weight, metabolism, or blood pressure.
